Investors are queuing up – but cities have to send them away

Article from the Recklinghäuser Zeitung from Monday, February 21, 2022

Under the headline “Investors are queuing up – but cities have to send them away”, the Recklinghäuser Zeitung reported in an article on Monday, February 21, on the lack of industrial and commercial space in the Recklinghausen district and the importance of the gate.ruhr and newpark projects for the region. According to the report, there are significantly more interested parties for the planned newPark industrial estate in Datteln than there is space available on the site.

In the article by Michael Wallkötter, Manfred Gehrke, business promoter for the city of Marl, speaks of a “real shortage of space” and is particularly concerned about existing companies for which there are too few opportunities to expand. Against the backdrop of the limited opportunities for companies to settle here, he complains that the issue of jobs and training places for future generations is being neglected in public perception.

Final spurt for the newPark development plan

Report in the Dattelner Morgenpost from June 17, 2023

On Monday, June 19, 2023, the Datteln City Council will vote on the development plan for the first construction phase of the newPark. This has now been reported by the Dattelner Morgenpost. The council’s decision on the development plan would be an important milestone for the realization of the project. 60 hectares of marketable industrial space would then be available.

newPark Managing Director Andreas Täuber commented on the upcoming vote in the Dattelner Morgenpost article. “Despite all the political interference, he still firmly believes in success,” reports the Morgenpost. He is certain that the first building will be completed on the first construction phase by 2026.

Although he understands the criticism of the newPark, the newspaper reports, he also pleads not to lose sight of the project’s opportunities – such as the creation of jobs. Täuber does not see the shortage of skilled workers as a problem for the newPark, he told the newspaper. “He still sees structural problems in the region, as the Ruhr area has been severely weakened by the end of the steel and coal industry, meaning that jobs have been lost,” reports the Dattelner Morgenpost. “A variety of workplaces is therefore needed.”

There is still great interest in the newPark, Andreas Täuber continued. Especially now, when interest in locating production here is growing due to global conditions. Talks with interested parties are already underway, he told the newspaper. “But the official marketing will ideally start on Monday evening, when we have the planning permission. Because then we have planning law. Then we can talk concretely about what.”

City council votes by a large majority in favor of the newPark

Report in the Dattelner Morgenpost from June 20, 2023

The decision has been made: The Datteln city council has voted in favor of the newPark by a large majority. This has now been reported by the Dattelner Morgenpost. There can be no question of a close result. “The council approves the draft development plan by 33 votes to 8,” writes the newspaper. Only the Greens and the left-wing parliamentary group had spoken out against the park, the report continued. An application by the Greens to interrupt and re-examine the development plan had previously been rejected.

This means that nothing stands in the way of the first construction phase. “In the next steps, the administration is to arrange the financing of the development of the site,” the Morgenpost continues. With a total area of 290 hectares, including 156 hectares of marketable industrial space, the newPark is set to become the largest industrial and commercial area in NRW. Planning law has now been created with the development plan for the first construction phase with 60 hectares of marketable industrial space. They will soon be available to industrial companies from all over the world.

The call for land is getting louder

Reports in the Welt am Sonntag from December 3, 2023 and the WAZ from January 17, 2024

Now that the development plan for the newPark has become legally binding following the publication of the city of Datteln’s council resolution, the largest industrial area in North Rhine-Westphalia is attracting more and more attention. The Welt am Sonntag and the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung have now also reported on the planned industrial estate.

“The city of Datteln’s development plan for the first construction phase of this inter-municipal industrial area has been legally binding since mid-November,” writes Welt am Sonntag. The special thing about newPark: the large area. “There are […] inquiries with much larger space requirements,” Welt am Sonntag quotes newPark Managing Director Andreas Täuber as saying. He cited the establishment of TSMC in Dresden as an example. The Taiwanese semiconductor factory requires 50 hectares and creates 2000 jobs. “This is the league in which newPark will be competing,” says Täuber. The first companies could be building as early as 2026. Andreas Täuber expects 3,000 new jobs, Welt am Sonntag continues.

The decision on the development plan means that the ball is now in the state government’s court. It must co-finance the development of the site for industrial use, writes Welt am Sonntag.

The Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung also reported on the planning status of the newPark. “The demand for large spaces in newPark is very high,” Andreas Täuber told WAZ. “The market is interested. The location is historically favorable for bringing factories for semiconductors, e-car batteries and similar products to the Ruhr region.”

The large space at newPark is a major advantage, Fritz Jaeckel, Managing Director of IHR Nord West, emphasized to the WAZ: “There are a whole range of companies that have asked for space but could not be met. NRW was not an option for Tesla because there was no suitable space. newPark is now one.”

Conference on the future of Germany as a business location

Managing Director Andreas Täuber took part in conference by invitation

At the invitation of the German Economic Institute and Wirtschaftsdienst, newPark Managing Director Andreas Täuber took part in the conference “On the future of Germany as a business location” in Berlin on February 7, 2024.

Top economists from our country spoke on topics such as key industries, innovative capacity and green transformation. The event was opened by Nicole Waidlein from the ZBW’s business service. This was followed by several presentations on topics from the innovation and digitalization, labour market, skilled workers and human capital and green transformation blocks. A panel discussion on industrial policy strategy rounded off the event.

There was also an opportunity to present the interests of the region with the planned newPark industrial site in the discussions.

Promising talks at the EXPO REAL in Munich

Promising talks at the EXPO REAL in Munich

Report in the UMBAU21 magazine from October 10, 2023

After almost 20 years of planning, a breakthrough has now been achieved: The first construction phase for the newPark has been decided. Equipped with planning rights for 60 hectares of marketable industrial space, newPark Managing Director Andreas Täuber set off for EXPO REAL in Munich, where he met with great interest. The UMBAU21 magazine has now reported on this. “In Munich, we were able to hold promising talks that will open up exciting prospects for the Emscher-Lippe region,” he told UMBAU21. “We have 60 hectares of commercial space here with building rights – you won’t find that anywhere else in NRW. That gives some investors a pulse.” The great response at the trade fair made him proud, Andreas Täuber continued. “And these are ‘only’ the first 60 hectares of a total of 156 hectares of marketable industrial space. We have thus sent out a clear signal for the Emscher-Lippe region in Munich. We are a force to be reckoned with in the future!” commented Andreas Täuber on the exciting days in Munich after his return to the Ruhr region.

After the joint meeting of three IHK regional committees, the focus is also on the newPark.

newPark enters the decisive phase

Article from the Recklinghäuser Zeitung from Saturday, 9 October 2021

The Recklinghäuser Zeitung reported on the project in an article by Michael Wallkötter, head of the regional editorial office of the Recklinghäuser Zeitung. Under the headline “newPark enters the decisive phase”, one can read about the planned disclosure of the development plan and the orientation of the project – “Green tech and digital production (“Industry 4.0”) are the buzzwords for which the new industrial estate is to stand“, the report says. It is also mentioned that the “predominant part of the energy demand of the newPark companies” is to be covered by “solar power and combined heat and power“.

From the commentary on the article by Michael Wallkötter:

“The Emscher-Lippe region, which is still undergoing structural change and has many social problems, urgently needs the jobs in the newPark – and quickly!”
